Black Marriage

Ad Reinhardt was known for his "black paintings" which he felt was art. However, art should move the viewer in a negative or even positive way but how can one be moved by the absence of a message in a paintings or work which conveys what seems to be of nothingness?

A sense of or the literal presence of nothingness has moved a lot of people. There is a concpet called 'the void' which would be important to talk about here. And let's try to remember something of up-most importance. Defining art is a very tricky and slippery slope. Marshall McLuhan defined it as 'anything you can get away with.' But good, bad or indifferent, if the artist says it is art, it is art, anything else is a judgement call on our parts. That is how Duchamp stated the function of the meaning (or definition of art). I also believe we are going to have to focus on what minimalism is and who is a minimalist. Who I want you to know as 'minimalists' is Donald Judd, Carl Andre, Frank Stella, Dan Flavin, Robert Morris, and the early work of Robert Smithson.
